Current Status of Infant Breast Feeding Patterns


Abstract
This study was attempted to know the current status of breast feeding patterns among Korean mothers living in the rural and urban areas.
From June 1979to July 1980, a survey was conducted . covering 544 mothers (Rural 250 and Urban 294) who fed breast milk for her babies in the city of Seoul and five counties of Young dong, Chung won, Gaesan, Chunan and Young ju. The results are as follows:
1. The reasons that the mother select the breast feeding were as follows; "Mother-child good relationship and health (43.9%), According to the custom or advice by the aged (40.1%), Refusal of feeding or diarrhea from cow¢¥s milk (11.2%), Too expensive cow¢¥s milk (4.8%)."
There was a significant correlation in the reason that the mother select the breast feeding according to the districts and mothers¢¥ age (p<0.01).
2. The rate that the¢¥ colostrum fed by mother was 64.0%, there was a no significant difference between colostrum feeding and no colostrum feeding according to the districts, mothers¢¥ age, education and birth place (p>0.05).
The major reasons that the mother fed colostrum for her baby as follows; "Greater immunity and nutrition (50.0%), No reasons (42.8%), No substitutional food (5.5%), etc."
The major reasons that the mother fed not colostrum for her baby as follows; "Expressing is better (38.3%), Separation from hospital delivery (26.5%), Breast engorgement (17.4%) , ...etc."
3. In the feeding interval self demand feeding ranked highest with 66.9%, regular+self demand feeding next with 25.0% and regular feeding followed them with 8.1%. But there was no differencein the feeding interval according to the districts, mothers¢¥ age and education (p>0.05).
4. The mothers¢¥ feeding position were noted as follows; "Sitting+lying (56.1%), Sitting
(37.9%), Lying (6.0%). There was no difference in the mothers¢¥ feeding position according to the districts and mothers¢¥ age (p>0.05).
5. Bubbling pattern after feeding were as _follows: "Always (41.9%), Never (32.7%), Sometimes (25.4%)." There was a significant correlation in bubbling after feeding according to the districts and mothers education (p<0.01).
6. Breast cleasing before and after feeding were as follows; "Sometimes (45.4¡Æx), Never (28. 5%), Always (26.1%)." There was a significant correlation in the breast cleansing ¢¥before and after feeding between rural and urban areas (p7. The hand washing of mother before feeding were as follows; "Sometimes (46.9%), Always (14.5%), Never (14.5%)." There was no significant difference in maternal hand washing before feeding according to the districts and mothers¢¥ age (p>0.05).
8. Practice for breast milk supply were as follows: "Practiced (47.2%), Not practiced (52.8%)." There was . a remarkable difference in the practice for breast milk supply according to the level of mothers¢¥education (p<0.01).
9. The mothers¢¥ opinion about ideal feeding method, breast feeding ranked highest with 65.6%, mixed feeding next with 31.3% and artifical feeding followed them with 3.1%. There was significant difference about ideal feeding method according to the districts (p
